How it works

Enter the number of smoothie servings you are blending. This smoothie serving calculator allows 150 grams of fruit, 200 ml of liquid and 4 ice cubes per serving. For 4 servings that is 600 grams of fruit, 800 ml of liquid and 16 ice cubes. For 2 servings it is 300 grams of fruit, 400 ml of liquid and 8 ice cubes. Check that the total fits your blender before you blend, and blend in two batches if it does not.

fruit = servings × 150 g; liquid = servings × 200 ml; ice = servings × 4

Per serving amounts

One smoothie serving in this calculator uses 150 grams of fruit, 200 ml of liquid and 4 ice cubes. That gives a single serving of roughly 350 ml once blended, before any thickener or protein add in. These recipe quantities make recipe scaling simple: double them for two servings, and so on.

The 3 2 1 smoothie ratio

A popular smoothie ratio is 3 parts frozen fruit, 2 parts liquid and 1 part body, where body means yogurt, silken tofu, avocado, oats or a scoop of protein powder. For one serving that works out near 1.5 cups of fruit, 1 cup of liquid and half a cup of body. Use the ratio as a starting point, then adjust liquid for the thickness you like.

Frozen fruit vs ice

Frozen fruit vs fresh fruit is a key choice. Frozen fruit chills and thickens at the same time, because you freeze the fruit own water instead of adding extra water. Ice dilutes flavour as it melts, so if your fruit is already frozen, use fewer ice cubes or none at all. If you only have fresh fruit, cut the liquid by about a third and expect a thinner result.

Choosing the liquid

Water keeps flavour clean, milk and almond milk add creaminess, coconut water and juice add sweetness, and cold green tea adds a light flavour base. For a thicker smoothie, use about 1 cup of liquid to 2 cups of solid ingredients. For a thinner, drinkable smoothie, add liquid a little at a time until it blends freely.

Thickening without more ice

Oats at 1 to 2 tablespoons per serving, a quarter to half an avocado, frozen banana, or a spoonful of yogurt can thicken a smoothie without diluting it. Add thickeners at the start of blending so they mix evenly.

Smoothies for a group

For a group, multiply one serving by the number of guests, then check blender capacity. A 4 serving batch needs 600 grams of fruit and 800 ml of liquid, which may exceed a small blender jug, so blend in two batches and stir the batches together before serving.

Worked example: 2 and 4 servings

For 2 servings: fruit 300 grams, liquid 400 ml, ice 8 cubes. For 4 servings: fruit 600 grams, liquid 800 ml, ice 16 cubes. For 1 serving: fruit 150 grams, liquid 200 ml, ice 4 cubes.

Frequently asked questions

About 150 grams of fruit per serving in this calculator, or about 1.5 cups of frozen fruit.

About 200 ml of liquid per serving, adjusted up for a thinner smoothie or down for a thicker one.

About 4 ice cubes per serving when using fresh fruit. With frozen fruit, use fewer cubes or none, since extra ice dilutes flavour.

A standard serving is about 8 to 12 ounces of blended smoothie, which is roughly 250 to 350 ml depending on the recipe.

It is 3 parts frozen fruit, 2 parts liquid and 1 part body, such as yogurt, avocado, oats or protein powder.

Frozen fruit gives a thicker, colder smoothie without extra ice. Fresh fruit works too, but cut the liquid by about a third.

Use frozen banana, yogurt, oats, avocado or less liquid. Add thickeners early so they blend evenly.

Yes, for a short time. Store a blended smoothie chilled and stir before serving, since it can separate as it stands.

Greens can replace part of the fruit in the ratio. Keep the liquid the same at first, then adjust, since greens add bulk but little sweetness.
