How it works

Enter the number of geese, the flock stage and a waste allowance. The calculator starts from a daily feed base per goose, adds waste, and scales it to the flock per day, per week and per 30 days, plus the number of 25 kg bags per month. Results are planning estimates, not veterinary advice.

Feed per goose = stage base × (1 + waste). Flock daily = per goose × geese. Bags = monthly kg / 25, rounded up.

How the goose feed formula works

An adult goose at maintenance needs about 200 grams of feed per day in this calculator, a laying goose needs 260 grams and a growing goose needs 300 grams. The waste allowance is added to the base, because spilled and wet feed still has to be bought. Ten geese at maintenance with 10 percent waste need 220.00 grams each, 2.20 kg per day, 15.40 kg per week and 66.00 kg per 30 days, which is 3 bags of 25 kg. This gosling feeding chart helps with feed cost planning, because growing goslings eat the most per bird.

Goose feed chart by flock size and stage

Feed needs scale directly with flock size, so doubling the flock doubles the daily total. Laying geese need more than maintenance geese, and growing goslings need the most per bird. Twenty laying geese with no waste allowance need 5.20 kg per day and 156.00 kg per 30 days. Use the bag count to order ahead, and keep at least one spare bag for wet weather when birds eat more and waste rises.

Grass, grain, and grazing geese

Geese are strong grazers, and good grass can replace a large part of the bought ration in the growing season. Birds on poor pasture, in winter, or kept indoors need the full bought ration. Offer grain in the evening to bring birds home, keep grit and clean water available at all times, and never feed mouldy grain. If birds are losing condition on grass alone, add bought feed rather than waiting for the flock to weaken.

Feeding mistakes that cost money

Free choice feeding in open troughs invites wild birds and waste, while strict rationing without weighing can slowly starve a flock. Weigh feed for a week to learn the real daily use, then set the ration from that. Split the daily feed into morning and evening feeds, keep troughs dry and sheltered, and store bags off the ground in a dry, rodent proof place.

Frequently asked questions

An adult goose at maintenance needs about 200 grams per day in this calculator, or 220 grams with a 10 percent waste allowance. Laying geese need about 260 grams and growing geese about 300 grams.

A laying goose needs about 260 grams of feed per day in this calculator, more than a maintenance goose, because egg production lifts energy and protein demand.

Geese on excellent pasture can get much of their feed from grass in summer, but in winter, on poor pasture, or when laying, they need bought feed as well. Watch body condition and add grain when it falls.

Ten geese at maintenance with 10 percent waste need 66.00 kg per 30 days, which is 3 bags of 25 kg. Larger flocks and laying birds need proportionally more.

Twice a day works well for most flocks: a morning feed and an evening feed that brings birds back to the pen. Keep grass or hay available between feeds when birds are not grazing.

Yes, geese need clean water deep enough to dip the whole head whenever they eat, because they wash feed down and clean their eyes and nostrils. Never feed dry pellets without water nearby.

A waterfowl or all flock ration suits most geese, with grass, greens and grain as part of the mix. Avoid high protein chick starter for adult geese and never feed mouldy or stale grain.
