How it works

Pick the life stage, enter the flock size and the number of days, add a waste allowance, and enter your bag weight. The calculator returns feed per bird per day, daily feed for the whole flock, total feed for the period, and bags needed rounded up. Multiply bags by your local bag price for a feed cost estimate. These are planning estimates, not a balanced ration: breed, temperature, and laying rate all move the real figure.

Daily feed (kg) = flock size × feed per bird per day (g) / 1,000 × (1 + waste percent / 100). Total feed = daily feed × days. Bags = total feed / bag weight, rounded up. Rates used: chick 7 g, grower 18 g, layer 28 g, breeder 28 g, maintenance 24 g per bird per day.

How the quail feed formula works

How much feed do quail eat per day? It depends on stage, and this quail feed calculator uses one rate per stage so the maths stays visible: chick 7 g, grower 18 g, layer 28 g, breeder 28 g, and maintenance 24 g per bird per day in grams. The quail feed formula is daily feed in kg equals flock size times grams per bird per day divided by 1,000, then increased by the waste allowance. Worked example: how much feed for 10 quail per day at layer rate with 10 percent waste? 10 times 28 g is 280 g, or 0.28 kg, plus 10 percent waste gives 0.31 kg per day, 9.24 kg in 30 days. A second example: 100 quail per month at layer rate with no waste eat 84 kg in 30 days, which is 4 bags of 25 kg when rounded up, or 2 bags of 50 kg. How many quail can a 50 kg bag feed? At 28 g per bird per day, one 50 kg bag feeds about 1,785 bird-days, so 50 layers for about 35 days before waste.

Quail feed chart by age and protein

Use this quail feed chart by age to pick the stage, and check the protein column against your feed bag, because quail feed protein percentage matters as much as quantity. Chick starter is 24 to 26 percent protein for the first 6 weeks, grower feed is 20 to 24 percent, and quail layer feed is 18 to 20 percent protein with 2.5 to 2.75 percent calcium for laying hens. Quail breeder feed protein is 20 to 24 percent. Standard vs jumbo quail feed intake differs: standard Coturnix adults eat about 28 to 30 g per day, while jumbo Coturnix eat about 31 to 35 g per day, so add about 15 percent for jumbo birds. Quail chick feed week by week rises fast: roughly 4 g per day in week 1, 10 g in week 2, 20 g in week 3, and 25 to 28 g in week 4. Cold weather can add 10 to 15 percent to intake, and heat above 25 degrees Celsius can reduce it slightly.

Quail feed vs chicken feed, and what quail should not eat

Quail feed vs chicken feed is a common question, and the answer matters for chicks. Chicken starter at 18 to 20 percent protein is too low for quail chicks, and chicken layer feed at about 16 percent protein is below the quail minimum. Is turkey starter OK for quail chicks? Turkey starter or game bird feed for quail, at 24 to 28 percent protein, is a much better substitute than chicken feed. When should quail switch to layer feed? Switch about 2 weeks before the first egg, or at the first egg, over 5 to 7 days of mixed feed. Coturnix quail begin laying at 6 to 8 weeks. What should quail not eat? Avoid caffeine, alcohol, avocado, chocolate, salt, raw beans, mouldy or spoiled food, high fat foods, and dairy. Keep treats to at most 10 percent of intake, and offer oyster shell in a separate dish for layers only, never mixed into the main feed, because laying quail need extra calcium and non-layers do not.

Quail feed cost and feed conversion per dozen eggs

The quail feed cost calculator part of this page is simple: total cost equals total feed times your price per kg, and bags times your bag price gives the same total. Cost to feed quail per month for 50 layers at 28 g per day with 10 percent waste is 46.2 kg in 30 days, so at any bag price you can divide by 50 birds to get cost per bird per month. How much does it cost to feed quail chicks to one month old? A standard Coturnix chick eats about 630 g to one month old, and a jumbo chick about 725 g, so multiply that weight by your price per kg. Quail feed conversion per dozen eggs uses the old rule of about 400 g of feed per 12 eggs, so cost per dozen eggs equals 0.4 kg times your price per kg. Store feed cool, dry, and rodent proof, buy only what the flock uses while fresh, and use an anti-spill trough feeder, because quail flick seed from mixes and waste is the easiest cost to cut. This quail feeding guide tracks quail feed consumption across stages, so you can plan monthly totals from the same rates used in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

An adult Coturnix quail eats about 24 to 30 g per day, a laying hen about 28 g, and a jumbo about 31 to 35 g. Chicks eat far less at first, about 4 g per day in week 1, rising to 25 to 28 g by week 4.

Starter feed should be 24 to 26 percent protein to 6 weeks, grower 20 to 24 percent, and layer or breeder 18 to 20 percent protein, with 2.5 to 2.75 percent calcium for layers.

Switch about 2 weeks before the first egg, or at the first egg, over 5 to 7 days of mixed feed. Coturnix quail usually start laying at 6 to 8 weeks.

Adult quail can eat chicken feed in a pinch, but it is not ideal, and chicken starter is too low in protein for quail chicks. Game bird feed or turkey starter at 24 to 28 percent protein is a better choice for chicks.

Yes. Laying quail need 2.5 to 2.75 percent calcium, offered as oyster shell in a separate dish so non-layers are not forced to eat it.

About 28 g in total in week 1, rising from about 1 g on day 1 to about 8 g by day 7, then about 70 g in week 2 and about 140 g in week 3.

Divide total feed by your bag weight and round up. For example, 50 layers for 30 days at 28 g with 10 percent waste need 46.2 kg, which is 2 bags of 25 kg.

Use about 400 g of feed per dozen eggs. Multiply 0.4 kg by your feed price per kg to get the feed cost per dozen eggs, before housing and other costs.
