How it works

Enter the number of turkeys and their stage. The calculator multiplies the stage space per animal by the flock or herd size, applies the minimum indoor total for small groups, and gives the indoor area, outdoor area, total area and the side of a square pen. Results are planning estimates, not a substitute for local welfare rules.

Indoor = max(animals × indoor per animal, minimum indoor). Outdoor = animals × outdoor per animal. Total = indoor + outdoor.

How the turkey pen formula works

Turkeys need far more space than chickens because adult birds are large. Poults need 1 sq ft indoors each with a 10 sq ft minimum, growing birds need 2.5 sq ft with a 20 sq ft minimum, and adults need 6 sq ft with a 30 sq ft minimum. Outdoor space is 5 sq ft per poult, 10 sq ft per growing bird and 20 sq ft per adult. Ten adults need 60.00 sq ft indoors and 200.00 sq ft outdoors, 260.00 sq ft in total. Use this turkey coop layout guide by age to plan a house of the right square feet for your flock.

Indoor shelter and outdoor run

Adult turkeys need a tall shelter with room to roost, about 4 to 5 ft of headroom, and a secure outdoor run for daytime. Broad breasted birds move less than heritage birds but still need the full floor area, because crowding causes feather pecking and injuries. Give heritage flocks extra run space when you can, since they roam and forage far more actively.

Space by age and flock size

Poults grow fast, so a pen that fits week old birds will be far too small by 16 weeks. Plan the adult pen from the start and use movable brooder rings for the first weeks. For 4 poults the indoor result is the 10.00 sq ft minimum, not 4 sq ft, because tiny groups still need room to move, feed and rest without piling.

Layout, roosts, and ventilation

A square pen side is only a starting point: turkeys do better in a long pen with roosts along one wall and feeders and waterers spaced apart. Keep litter dry, ventilate without draughts, and fence the run against predators with buried wire. Overcrowded, damp pens are the fastest route to respiratory problems and poor growth.

Frequently asked questions

Adults need 6 sq ft indoors each with a 30 sq ft minimum total, and 20 sq ft outdoors each. Poults need 1 sq ft indoors and growing birds need 2.5 sq ft.

Ten adults need 60.00 sq ft indoors and 200.00 sq ft outdoors, 260.00 sq ft in total.

Plan on 20 sq ft of outdoor run per adult turkey, more for heritage breeds that roam and forage.

Poults need 1 sq ft indoors each in the first weeks, rising to 1.5 sq ft by 8 weeks and 2.5 sq ft by 16 weeks in published guides.

About 4 to 5 ft of headroom lets adult turkeys roost comfortably without hitting the roof when they stretch.

Yes, an outdoor run gives exercise, foraging and fresh air, and reduces feather pecking. Indoor only flocks need more indoor space instead.

Overcrowding raises stress, feather pecking, injuries, disease and wet litter, and it slows growth. More space is almost always better.
