Every unit converts through square metres. The key rule: area factors are the SQUARE of length factors, 1 m = 3.28084 ft, but 1 m² = 10.7639 ft², not 3.28. Land units use defined values: 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.86 m²; 1 hectare = 10,000 m² exactly.
result = value × (from-unit in m² ÷ to-unit in m²)
Every area unit converts through the square metre. The crucial insight: area factors are the square of length factors. Since 1 foot = 0.3048 metres, 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.092903 m². This squaring is why there are 10.76 square feet per square metre, not 3.28.
Worked example: a 2,400 ft² house in square metres. 2,400 × 0.092903 = 222.97 m², a typical mid-size home. Land example: 120 acres in hectares. 120 × 4,046.86 = 485,623 m² = 48.56 hectares.
1. Enter your area value. 2. Pick the unit it is measured in, square metres, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometres or square miles. 3. Pick the unit you want.
The result appears instantly to 4 decimal places. Real-estate listings, construction material estimates and farm sizes are the most common uses.
1 square metre (m²) = 10.7639 ft² | 1 square foot (ft²) = 0.092903 m² = 144 in² | 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.86 m² | 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres | 1 square kilometre = 100 hectares = 247.105 acres | 1 square mile = 640 acres = 2.58999 km² | 1 square yard = 9 ft² = 0.836127 m²

The acre is an old English land unit, originally the area a yoke of oxen could plough in one day, standardized at 43,560 square feet. The hectare is the metric answer: exactly 10,000 m² (a 100 m × 100 m square), introduced in France in 1795.
One hectare is about 2.47 times an acre, so the two are not interchangeable. In practice: the US and UK countryside run on acres (farm listings, horse paddocks), while metric countries use hectares for agriculture, forestry and planning. A quick estimate: acres × 0.4 ≈ hectares (within about 1%).
The most frequent and dangerous error is using a length factor for area: dividing 120 ft² by 3.28 gives 36.6 m², but the correct answer is 120 × 0.0929 = 11.15 m², off by a factor of 3.3.
Another common mix-up is hectares vs acres (2.47 to 1, not 1 to 1). And remember that real-estate square footage often excludes garages, porches and unfinished areas, the listed number is not always the total built area.
Real estate: US listings use square feet, most other countries use square metres, a 2,000 ft² apartment is 186 m², and land parcels are listed in acres (US) or hectares (metric). Construction: flooring, paint and roofing are sold by area, so a metric tile in an imperial-measured room needs conversion. Agriculture: farmland sizes are quoted in acres (US/UK) or hectares (metric countries), and crop yields are reported per area. Geography: population density is people per km² internationally but per square mile in the US.
A square metre is roughly a card table. A square foot is about a large floor tile. An acre is about 90% of an American football field (without end zones), or roughly 16 tennis courts, a square about 63.6 m on each side. A hectare is about 2.5 football fields, easy to picture as a 100 m × 100 m square.
Use these benchmarks to catch errors: if your calculation says a normal house is 2,000 m², something went wrong for a normal home.
Exactly 43,560 square feet. That is roughly a square 208.7 ft on each side, or about 90% of an American football field without the end zones.
Multiply acres by 0.404686. For example, 50 acres × 0.404686 = 20.234 hectares. A quick mental estimate is acres × 0.4 (within about 1%).
Exactly 10,000 square metres, a 100 m × 100 m square, equal to 2.47105 acres. About 1.4 standard soccer fields, or 2.5 American football fields.
Exactly 640 acres. This comes from the US Public Land Survey System, which divided land into 640-acre sections.
Multiply by 0.092903. For example, 1,000 ft² × 0.092903 = 92.9 m². (Or divide by 10.7639, the same result.)
Because area is two-dimensional: the factor must be squared. 1 m = 3.28084 ft, but 1 m² = 3.28084² = 10.7639 ft². Using the linear factor gives an answer off by 3.3×.
A hectare is bigger, about 2.47 times an acre. One acre is roughly 40% of a hectare.
About 75–90% of an American football field, or roughly 16 tennis courts. In metric terms, about 4,047 m², a square 63.6 m on each side.
