How it works

Every unit converts through kilograms using exact international definitions (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, agreed in 1959). Your value is converted to kilograms first, then divided by the target unit's kilogram factor.

result = value × (from-unit factor in kg ÷ to-unit factor in kg)

The weight conversion formula, explained

Every weight conversion here follows one simple two-step formula:

result = value × (from-unit in kg ÷ to-unit in kg)

The anchor is the international avoirdupois pound, defined in 1959 as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Every other unit is defined against the kilogram: 1 ounce = 0.028349523125 kg, 1 gram = 0.001 kg, 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg.

Worked example: convert 70 kg to pounds. Divide 70 by 0.45359237 (the kilogram value of one pound): 70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.3236 lb. Reverse it: convert 150 lb to kilograms by multiplying 150 × 0.45359237 = 68.0389 kg.

How to use this weight converter

1. Type your value into the Value field. 2. Pick the unit you are converting from and the unit you want. 3. Your converted weight appears instantly, rounded to 4 decimal places.

The most common conversion is kilograms to pounds: 70 kg, a typical adult weight, is 154.3236 lb. Airline baggage (23 kg = 50.7063 lb) and gym plates (20 kg = 44.0925 lb) are other everyday uses.

Common weight conversions at a glance

Use this quick weight conversion chart as your reference table:

1 kilogram (kg) = 2.20462 pounds | 1 pound (lb) = 453.592 grams = 16 ounces | 1 ounce (oz) = 28.3495 grams | 1 metric tonne (t) = 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lb | 1 gram (g) = 0.035274 ounces

These pairs cover nearly every everyday need: body weight, cooking ingredients, parcel weights and shipping quotes. For cooking, remember that 8 oz is half a pound (226.8 g) and 1 lb is 453.6 g.

Kilograms, pounds or stones: which unit where

Most of the world weighs in kilograms, the SI base unit of mass used in science, medicine and trade. The United States uses pounds and ounces for almost everything, from body weight to groceries. The United Kingdom is a mix: officially metric, but stones (14 lb = 6.35029 kg) remain the everyday unit for body weight, 70 kg is 11 stone 0.3 lb.

For freight and industry, the metric tonne (1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lb) is the global standard, while the US still quotes the short ton (2,000 lb = 907.18 kg) for bulk goods.

Common mistakes in weight conversion

The classic error is rounding the conversion factor too early: using 2.2 instead of 2.20462 introduces about 0.2% error, small for body weight, but real money on a multi-tonne freight quote. Round only the final answer, never the factor.

Another trap is the troy ounce: precious metals are priced in troy ounces (31.1035 g), not avoirdupois ounces (28.3495 g), a 10% difference that matters when gold is involved. And tonnes are not US tons: one metric tonne is 1.10231 short tons.

Mass vs weight: the one-paragraph physics

Strictly, mass (kilograms) measures the amount of matter and never changes, while weight is the gravitational force on that mass, measured in newtons, you would weigh slightly less on the Moon but your mass would be identical. Everyday language uses weight for both, and so does this converter: your bathroom scale reads kilograms or pounds of mass and calls it weight.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 2.2046226218. The international pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg, so 1 kg = 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.20462 lb. The rough 2.2 shortcut is within 0.2% of the exact value.

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. For example, 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.3236 lb. This converter does it instantly with the full-precision factor.

Multiply pounds by 0.45359237. For example, 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.0389 kg.

One avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, commonly rounded to 28.35 g. The troy ounce used for gold and silver is different: 31.1035 g.

Exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces per pound. That is why 8 oz of butter is half a pound (226.8 g).

One stone is exactly 14 pounds, or 6.35029318 kg. The UK and Ireland still use stones for body weight: 11 stone is about 69.85 kg, and 70 kg is about 11 stone 0.3 lb.

One metric tonne (1,000 kg) equals 2,204.62 lb. Do not confuse it with the US short ton of 2,000 lb (907.18 kg) or the UK long ton of 2,240 lb.

No, that is just a mental shortcut. One kilogram is 2.20462 lb, about 10% more than 2 lb. Fine for a quick estimate, but wrong for shipping quotes and science.

Mass (kilograms) is the amount of matter and never changes; weight is the gravitational force on that mass (newtons) and varies with location. Everyday scales report mass but call it weight.
