How it works

Enter the number of quail and the bird type. Standard Coturnix quail need about 0.33 sq ft each (3 birds per sq ft) and jumbo quail need about 0.50 sq ft each (2 birds per sq ft). The calculator gives the pen area, the side of a square pen, feeder length at 1 inch per bird, and drinkers at 1 per 5 birds. Results are planning estimates, not a substitute for local welfare rules.

Pen area = quail × space per bird. Feeder = quail × 1 inch. Drinkers = quail / 5, rounded up.

How the quail pen formula works

Pen area equals birds multiplied by space per bird. Twelve standard quail need 3.96 sq ft, with a square side of 1.99 ft, 12 inches of feeder and 3 drinkers. Twenty jumbo quail need 10.00 sq ft, with a square side of 3.16 ft, 20 inches of feeder and 4 drinkers. Keep pen height low, about 10 to 12 inches, or above 6 ft, because mid height pens cause head injuries when quail flush. Use this quail cage layout and setup guide to plan a cage of the right square feet for your covey.

Standard, jumbo, and aviary space

The 3 birds per sq ft figure suits pens and stacked cages, not aviaries. Aviaries, tractors and ground setups need more room because birds forage and move more. Jumbo lines are heavier and need the 2 birds per sq ft figure. When in doubt, give more space: crowded quail lay less, peck more and suffer more disease.

Feeders, waterers, and pen setup

Allow 1 inch of feeder space per quail and place feeders and waterers so every bird can reach them without crowding. Use nipple drinkers for adults at about 1 per 5 birds, with a second drinker in each section as insurance. Keep water shallow for chicks to prevent drowning, use small mesh wire, and cover the top, because quail flush upward when startled.

Worked example and flock planning

For 12 standard quail, a pen of 24 inches by 24 inches gives 4.00 sq ft, just above the 3.96 sq ft result, with room for a feeder and drinker. For larger coveys, use long pens about 2 ft deep so you can reach the back easily. Divide big flocks into sections rather than one huge pen, because smaller groups settle faster and are easier to manage.

Frequently asked questions

Standard Coturnix quail need about 0.33 sq ft each (3 per sq ft) and jumbo quail need about 0.50 sq ft each (2 per sq ft) in pens and cages.

Twelve standard quail need 3.96 sq ft, so a 24 inch by 24 inch pen (4.00 sq ft) works well, with 12 inches of feeder and 3 drinkers.

About 3 standard quail per sq ft, or 2 jumbo quail per sq ft. Aviaries need more space per bird than pens.

About 10 to 12 inches for pens and cages, or above 6 ft for aviaries. Mid height pens cause head injuries when birds flush.

About 1 inch of feeder space per quail, so a 10 bird covey needs at least 10 inches of feeder access.

About 1 nipple drinker per 5 adult quail, with a second drinker in each section as insurance against failure.

No, quail do well in pens and stacked cages with the right space, feeders and waterers. Aviaries give more room to forage but need more space per bird.
